Chronicler Letter

letter excerpt — at Gaviota, California:

By the way, there’s a story, set in 1846, of Chumash folk and soldiers from the Santa Barbara Presidio vs. Lt Col John C. Fremont. Of a conspiracy to block Fremont’s way by rolling boulders down upon him and his troops. As is the color-bleaching downfall of many a marvelous story, it simply isn’t true. Sigh!
